Glass Spice Jar Organization – Easy DIY

Easy DIY Spice Jars

This is a home project that can be done no matter the type of space you live in! With our recent move into a new apartment, I really had a chance to see just how many spices we have (ahem, we have way too many…). As I was storing them in a cabinet near the oven for easy access, I knew something had to change. Sifting through a variety of spice jars was not going to work for us long term + it is an easy project to tackle. So I thought I would start with an easy task before tackling harder projects.

Spice Jar DIY

I have been reading a ton of research on toxins + more specifically, toxins within the household. It’s quite scary to think of just how many products have toxins in them – from the generic cleaning solutions to the containers food is stored in. Most plastics contain BPAs or phthalates, both of which have been proven to have a direct link to disrupt normal human systems. Most often this happens when plastics are scratched or heated. Although the spice jars will not be heated, I am trying to swap out a majority of our food storage to glass. So, for this project, I was specifically looking for glass spice jars to kick start that process. It took quite a lot of digging but I found the perfect 2.5 oz glass spice jars on Amazon!

Items Needed for This Project:

Spice Jars (I chose these glass ones)

Labels (or marker//blank stickers) – you can click here for the ones I got from Etsy *super fast shipping!

Spice Jar Rack or Wall Hangers (I chose an expandable bamboo rack)

Oh + of course all of the spices you have! That’s it!!

Simple Spice Jar Labels

Glass Spice Jars

The jars themselves are made of borosilicate glass, according to the seller’s FAQ section. It is a thinner material which I actually prefer for a project such as this. The lids are bamboo + are secured in place by a rubber gasket. I personally love the clean look that comes with glass. I washed out each glass spice jar + let them dry overnight.

Minimalist Spice Jar Labels

Now comes the fun part! Or at least for me it was! After making sure each of the spice jars were dried off, I attached labels I purchased from Etsy. These spice jar labels are from the Minimal Collection + I love how clean + simple they look on the glass jars. Each label has a corresponding number for the herb or spice + it is easy to read when cooking. I’ve contemplated getting the rest of the minimal collection for other DIY projects throughout our home too!

After all of the labels were attached, I combined like spices or herbs. I then filled each glass jar with the corresponding spice or herb. Any of the leftover spices or herbs were placed in our additional stock area (which for us is above the microwave).

Bamboo Spice Jar Rack

Storing the Glass Spice Jars

Last but not least, I placed the bamboo spice jar rack in our cabinet + expanded it to the fullest length possible – you know for the absurd amount of spices we have! I love that this rack is not only bamboo but also adjustable because it can fit a wide variety of spaces. I placed the jars on the spice rack + decided to put them in alphabetical order because it is easier when I know where I should be looking. For my organizational purchases, I decided to start with A in the front left + once I finished the first row, I started with the next letter on the left side. Ultimately, I finished with the last spice in the back right.

So there you have it! Probably one of the easiest DIY projects to help organize a space that is used a lot in our kitchen. What do you think about how it turned out? Leave a comment below!
